To customize the OpenAI Codex desktop app, first use Settings → Appearance for native colors and fonts. If you want an actual image background, install an image-theme tool such as GptSkin and start with a free preset. These are separate from Codex CLI themes, which affect terminal syntax highlighting rather than the desktop workspace.

OpenAI's own support response describes desktop customization as the options under Settings → Appearance, including theme and UI/code fonts. Start there because it is native, fast, and officially supported. Use a third-party route only when native settings do not cover the effect you want.

Step 1: Try Native Appearance Settings

  1. Open the Codex desktop app.
  2. Open Settings and select Appearance.
  3. Choose a base theme and adjust the available colors and fonts.
  4. Open a real project and check body text, code, muted labels, buttons, and the composer.

Native settings are the right answer for most solid-color setups. They do not provide a photo or artwork behind the workspace.

Step 3: Create a Theme from Your Own Image

Attach a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image that you own and ask:

Step 4: Test Readability

Do not judge a theme from its wallpaper alone. Test it with a long thread, an active composer, code blocks, selected navigation, warnings, and both focused and unfocused windows. Text should remain readable without relying on the image being darkened until it disappears.
