About GptSkin

Meet GptSkin, the independent tool that turns an image into a complete theme for the Codex desktop app.
Jul 28, 2026

What GptSkin is

GptSkin turns one source image into a complete, installable theme for the Codex desktop app. It extracts a palette, generates coordinated interface colors and decorative surfaces, and packages the result for local application through the open-source GptSkin Skill.

GptSkin is an independent product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to OpenAI.

The video uses GptSkin-owned preset cards and controlled demo content. It contains no community uploads or screenshots of a user's real Codex workspace.

Why we built it

People spend hours in their coding workspace, yet most interfaces offer only a small set of visual choices. GptSkin makes that workspace personal without asking users to hand-edit CSS or expose their conversations. A photograph, illustration, brand asset, or generated artwork can become the visual source for a coherent Codex theme.

How the product works

  1. Choose a free preset or upload a JPEG, PNG, or WebP source image.
  2. GptSkin derives a coordinated theme and creates the required assets.
  3. Install the open-source GptSkin Skill.
  4. Apply the theme locally to the Codex desktop app.

The Skill changes presentation only. It does not read, modify, or transmit Codex conversations.

Product principles

  • Source-image fidelity: community previews are generated from the submitted source image, never from a user's private Codex window.
  • Local application: the open-source Skill applies themes on the user's own machine.
  • Clear boundaries: product limitations, local CDP behavior, pricing, and data handling are documented publicly.
  • Reversible customization: users can return to the standard Codex appearance by closing the themed session and launching Codex normally.

Who maintains GptSkin

GptSkin is maintained by the GptSkin team. The local installer and theme application code are published in the WendongAI/gptskin-skill repository under the MIT License. Product updates are recorded on the Updates page.
